Rare Bear: Joseph’s Clincher

By Rev. C.J. Barry Kentner

Isaiah, the 8th. Century BCE Prophet foretold the birth of Christ, with the words ” Behold, the virgin shall conceive, and bear a Son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”

That meant, and still does, “God with us.”

That prophecy was uttered in the eighth century, and while it was voiced again and again over the years, few believed it. Then, Mary, a virgin, from Bethlehem in Judea, conceived.

It was in the very early years of the First Century that the drama unfolded in the town of Bethlehem. And even though it was said that “Ephrata,” or Bethlehem, that a King would come from there, again no one believed. (Micah 5:2)

When Joseph, a carpenter, learned that his fiance was pregnant, he was considering a secret end to the engagement, when an Angel intervened. He reminded Joseph that He was the Son of David.

You see, Joseph was a direct descendant of King David, but he needed to be reminded of this. King David, son of Jesse, was the second King of Israel, but fourteen kings later, Jeconiah was defeated by King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and the Israelites were carried away to Babylon.

After 70 years, the Temple was rebuilt in Jerusalem and the Walls of the city were restored and life continued for the Israelites who returned.

Scriptures record that from Abraham to David, there were fourteen generations, and from David to the Captivity in Babylon, it was another fourteen generations. Then, from the Captivity to the birth of Christ was another fourteen generations, so you can see how far the genealogical line went.

Joseph was the son of Jacob, and husband of Mary, who birthed the Saviour. He was also the son of David, born in the line of David 28 generations later. No wonder he needed a reminder. “Joseph,” said the Angel, Son of David.” That was the clincher. Can you imagine how he must have felt?

As the Son of God he could not die;

But as the Son of Man, he could and did.

Jesus left His Majesty,
Poured out all His Glory,
And in the weakness of a baby’s cry
Left Heaven,
Took on Human form
And came to earth
to die.
